Lowrance point-1 External Antenna problem: a solution when it’s not working
Let’s see how to check that the external antenna of your GPS is properly working and, if not, how to fix it.
Many of us use an external antenna for the Lowrance GPS, and in particular the one identified by the acronym Point-1. The Point-1 antenna allows for better signal reception and a faster position update speed. However, it must be installed correctly otherwise there may be anomalies.
In the event that anomalous trends of the position, direction or speed of the cursor on the screen are perceived, it’s possible to easily check physically and via software whether the antenna is working well.
We recommend checking the correct operation of the antenna every time a new one is installed, that a different vehicle is driven for the first time or before a long journey. In this way it is possible, if necessary, to return to the nearest workshop to fix it.
How to understand that the Point-1 antenna is not working
Some of the signs that the Lowrance external antenna is not properly working:
- When moving, the map is oriented in the wrong direction (with Heading UP option active)
- When moving, the vessel is oriented in the wrong direction (with Course UP option active)
- Random map and cursor rotations especially when stationary
- Slow and inaccurate updates
- When the system has a invalid GPS position lock, the vessel symbol includes a question mark.
How to fix the Lowrance antenna: all the steps to follow
Now let’s see the operations to follow to fix the Point-1 antenna of our Lowrance GPS. These instructions are applied to most of the Lowrance GPS models currently on the market, including the latest HDS7, HDS9, HDS12.
- Check the correct positioning, assembly and wiring. Verify that the antenna is installed at the correct orientation. There is a small arrow at the top which must be parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and look forward. For assembly and cables, check the instructions for use (there is a small plastic T containing a resistance. Sometimes this element gets damaged. Try to replace it with a new item).
- Check that the Point-1 is the GPS antenna source. On the units press the Pages key > Settings > Network > Data Sources > GPS > All Data. You should see the Point-1 in this menu with the flag active. HDS also has an Auto Select feature, when this is enabled the HDS will choose the antenna with the best Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) from the available satellites. Depending on mounting location, view of the sky, etc. having Auto Select enabled may not always choose the Point-1 for GPS data.
- Verify that GPS is connected to satellites. Enter the main menu “Settings” > System > Satellites. Here check how many satellites are connected (you need to be in the open air) and what is the source that provides the signal (Point-1. If not, back to the Setting and choose the right antenna).
Following all these steps will fix most of the antenna problems. If this is not sufficient, it may be that the antenna or GPS is damaged. If so, please contact Lowrance customer service or your dealer.
